It's The End Of The Things As We Know It!

The End Of Things As We Know It!
I particularly loved the Animoto and smiley generators. I also loved learning about all google has to offer. We have a computer at home that doesn’t have Word on it so finding that you could save documents on the google drive and documents stuff was an amazing find.
I would have never Blogged outside of this program. I now want to start a special education blog where I create and facilitate a community of educator who are all reaching for the same goals for their students. I want to establish a place where we can supply and support each other’s success in the classroom.
I did not expect to learn new things (I’m using that term loosely). I honestly thought that what I already knew would help me slide by without much work having to be done. I was VERY wrong. The work wasn’t hard but it was new. I had to learn about never web tools that I had never explored before, some I LOVED and some I didn’t. Everything was a learning experience. I never expected to find tools I believe I can’t live without now.
I think the best thing the teacher could have done was to have the quarter due dates for the things and livetext exercises. Don’t change that! It kept me on target. I think the class would have been better to have the web quest done first. The web quest is very involved and we are squeezing it into the end of the semester when a million other things are due. It would have been nice to have the drawing or PowerPoint only at the end to finish.
I have new tools to bring to my classroom. This class has shown me how to teach to multiple learning styles. It creates hands on environment and it creates a better way to organize your class and parents.
I actually am going to create a new blog and have it focus specifically on working with special needs students. I want to have hyperlinks to resources with scientifically based practices. I want input and critique from peers on effective teaching methods. I never want my classroom to be boring and out of date. I want to pursue being a web 2.0er.

Discovery Exercise: Thing 21
  1. Create an account on Animoto.
  2. Create a 30 second clip or Animoto Short, by uploading at least ten pictures. Still got the Flickr account? Animoto can link directly to it.
  3. Choose from one of the songs in Animoto's music library or upload your own music file to go with your clip.
  4. Embed your new 30 second clip onto your blog. There is a special code just for Blogger that you can use.
  5. Blog about your experience using Animoto.

For Thing 21 Dr. Wall borrowed the activity from another site. She looked up the copy rights and saw they had creative commons license. She gave credit where credit was due.
I know that if material enhances the lesson so much so that it would only be effective with it then I can use it with a citation to the author. There are so many creative ways to teach but most are not my own ideas. Most educators use creative commons for their personal material. I can check the usage and see what criteria must be used to be able to use the material in my own classroom. Teaching students how to cite is an essential part of becoming an effective contributor in the community.  I 100% am a stickler about citations in writing papers. I am not a genius and a lot of what I think were not my original ideas. I always give credit where credit is due.

To be completely honest I most likely will not use this in my classroom. The system is not user friendly and the instructions were sub-par to comprehending the set-up. I plan on working with students with intensive autistic behaviors. They won’t be able to sit long enough to understand this binder system. A standard search engine would work perfectly or even a book marking site.
I created a binder but I have no idea if I did it right. I don’t have a clue what it’s supposed to look like or what it will actually do for me. I really enjoy bookmarks more than this site because of its lack of easy navigation. Probably my least favorite site we have explored other than fliker.

The Animoto site was AMAZING! I plan on using that a lot in my teaching career. The set-up was easy. The site itself was user friendly. This was one of the best exercises I the 23 things so far. It was fast and fun and now I have a collage of love photos of my husband and myself. This would be fun to make a class year book. It could highlight a student of the week or a parent of the month. This could be used as a great motivational tool. Loved this site and I will use it when I enter my future classroom.

Educating Peter is an amazing video that shows the struggles and successes of inclusion. Peter is a student with a disability that causes him to have behaviors and socially inappropriate peer interactions. This video was done in 1992 when inclusion wasn’t as popular as it is now. His teacher did not have the mind-set that I would have expected. I thought she would have been unhappy about the situation. Instead she was all for it, she even allowed the students to be active participants in helping Peter grow. This would be a great video for students to learn about diversity and acceptance of others.
“PowToon is the brand new Do-It-Yourself animated presentation tool that supercharges your presentations and videos! Save massive amounts of time and money by creating Presentoons that bring the WOW!-factor to product demos, business presentations, social media clips, and much more.”  This presentation tool could enhance the lessons I teach. It can be utilized to keep student attention.

The first 3 link I couldn’t get to open. So I am missing a huge chunk in this thing. I did, however, explore several of the different communities on the discovery page. I am a big Pinterest junky.  When I saw the link for Pinterest for Teachers I got really excited. The site was divided into grades and then some divisions of subject. It was definitely a teachers dream! I will most definitely borrow ideas from there but I will also post my ideas to there as well. I also went on to the baking site and borrowed recipes for cooking for thanksgiving. I’m excited to read all the different types of food people have posted that they have made. I love eating meals that are not the “norm.” I am only part of Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

I, like most people, have a lot of experience with Facebook, but twitter, not so much. I explored twitter. I really wanted to get started searching for interests but when you first sign up you have to do a million initial steps before actually exploring your twitter follows. That was a little frustrating. Once I made it through all the set up tasks I was able to search the people I followed. I found that the .org sites had twitter feeds. They had links to send me to new breaking stories. I was able to follow my passion and find ways to teach to the autism population. I was able to stay up to date on breaking news. It was a great experience that will make my life-long learning an easier task with these resources at my fingertips.
