Thing 1:
Habit #4 is one that I would consider to be a struggle for
me. Habit #4 states “have confidence in your-self as a confident effective
learner.” It’s extremely difficult to teach students to be life-long learners
when I, as a future teacher, don’t feel confident in my own learning sometimes.
I find myself knowing the right answers as teachers ask questions, but due to a
“self-esteem” issue, I’m too scared to share my answers. More often than not my
answers are always right. Habit #4 poses challenges, but I have to constantly
remind myself that I am a thinker, and wrong answers mean learning is/will take
place.
Habit #3 I believe to be a strength for me. Habit #3 states
“view problems as challenges.” I am one of those “special few” that love
working with special needs students. I see a special needs child as an
opportunity for growth and progress. Working with special needs children is a
huge challenge, one in which I learn something new each time there is an
interaction. Within a classroom, I don’t see problem children; I see an
opportunity to learn something new; an opportunity to figure out “why.” This
habit is why I want to be a BCBA (as far as the behavior side goes). I want to
help children by teaching them replacement behaviors for inappropriate behaviors.
Behaviors are a problem, but they are a problem with a solution as long as you
are up for the challenge.
